Chapter 12

We spent the next half hour sipping our coffee and munching through cookies in the library, going round and round with our theories about who could’ve slipped into the castle. On what the motive behind the curse might’ve been. Because that was the sticky part for me.

I couldn’t get over the why. The curse punished everyone in Crystalvia. It seemed larger than some sort of personal revenge. It didn’t make any sense yet.

“Well, current signs are pointing to the fact that it could be someone from the Emerald Nation,” Dani said. “I’m almost one hundred percent certain that you can’t find blood sage anywhere else in the world. It needs to grow in a certain environment, and it doesn’t transport well. The only reason I know about it is because I had to do some stupid report on it in the academy ages ago. Don’t ask me how I remember it.”

“What does blood sage do?”

Nahla had left us alone for the moment as we sat in the library. She’d gone off to fetch another pot of coffee, seeing how quickly we’d drained the first.

“I think I remember, but I’ve got a better idea to be sure.” Dani hoisted herself to her feet and winked at me. “What do you say we put this library to use?”

Dani and I began scouring the shelves. She started at one end while I covered the other, quickly skimming through the different sections until I located a wall labeled Medicinal Herbs. I dragged a finger along the spines of the dusty tomes until I found one book larger than the rest, an encyclopedia of sorts.

I heaved it down onto the table, exhaling heavily with the effort. I brushed away a thick layer of dust from the cover, sneezing as it surrounded me in a tufted cloud. Cracking it open, I flipped to the “B” section, but blood sage wasn’t listed there. I was beginning to lose heart until, on a whim, I flipped to “S”. Lo and behold, it was there—listed as a magical variation of sage.

Blood Sage: a rare herb grown in the fields of the Emerald Nation. Once it’s picked, it has a relatively short shelf life and must be used as soon as possible. To date, there is no known way to bottle, dry, or otherwise preserve blood sage, rendering it almost completely useless in the magical world.

Appearance: Blood sage is recognizable by its scent and the color of its leaves. It smells very similar to its cousin, the common kitchen herb. However, its leaves have a stripe of red down the middle, along with a smattering of red dots—akin to blood spatter—that gives it its gruesome name.

Qualities: Finality. Add this to any potion, and it will persist for a lifetime.

“You found something?”

I shoved the book toward Dani and pointed at the section on blood sage. She nodded along as she read the specifics. Eventually, she nodded.

“Well, that explains why I can see the Residuals,” Dani said. “The Residuals on something like this would be permanent.
